Nutley is the next village south of Forest Row on the A22, inside Maresfield Parish. The parish council’s home page says the parish is in Wealden, East Sussex, and that it comprises the wards of Fairwarp, Maresfield and Nutley. Use it as a practical starting point, not a ranking. A listing here is a doorway to the official page, not a recommendation.

The Things to do page is the fuller list. Open days, classes and Forest parking rules change. Check the listing, then confirm with the official site before you go.

A working windmill on the Forest

Nutley Windmill stands on Crowborough Road in Nutley. Uckfield Heritage, which looks after the mill, describes it as the country’s only working open-trestle post mill, on Ashdown Forest, with a design that goes back to the earliest English windmills. Maresfield Parish Council also calls it the oldest and only working open-trestle post mill in the country.

Uckfield Heritage gives the address as Crowborough Road, Nutley, East Sussex, TN22 3HY. It publishes open days on its own page and says the mill also opens most Wednesdays for maintenance, subject to volunteer availability. Those days can change. Use the listing for the official link, then confirm on the Uckfield Heritage page before you travel.

The same page says dogs are welcome. For cars it points visitors to Friends Clump, about 400 metres from the mill, and notes that Forest parking charges apply. There is limited disabled parking on site. The Conservators of Ashdown Forest run paid parking across Forest car parks, and blue badge holders are exempt if the badge is displayed. Check the Conservators’ parking page for how to pay on the day.

The village green and the Forest

Fords Green, also known as the Village Green, is part of Ashdown Forest. Maresfield Parish Council says the Conservators manage the Forest, and that upkeep of the recreation ground was delegated to the Fords Green Management Committee. That makes the green a simple outdoor stop in the village itself: open ground, sport, and a way onto the wider Forest.

The parish sports page lists Nutley Cricket Club at Fords Green since at least the 1800s, Nutley Bowling Club close to the green, and Nutley Football Club as a local club for all ages. The Conservators welcome visitors and ask people to follow the Forest code. Paths can be uneven and muddy after rain. The Walks page is the place for Forest Row Guide route notes. Wear shoes that can take heath and ride ground.

The Ashdown Forest Centre is at Wych Cross, Forest Row. Wych Cross sits between Forest Row and Nutley on the A22. Metrobus 270 lists Forest Row, Brambletye and Wych Cross, The Roebuck among its stops between East Grinstead and Brighton. Use that service if you are coming from Forest Row without a car, then check the operator map for the stop that suits your walk.

The High Street hall

Nutley War Memorial Hall is on the High Street, opposite the primary school and just off the A22. The hall’s own site describes a community hall and performance venue with a large stage, two meeting rooms, a kitchen, ramp access and a private car park. It takes bookings for events, drama groups and other hires, and lists a maximum hall capacity of 129 people.

The hall also lists regular community sessions on its homepage. Those days can move. Open the listing for the official site, then confirm there before you plan around a class or a show. The What’s On page already carries hall events when we have a public date. Treat that page as a starting list, not a live box office.

A church-hall cafe after the school run

Sunrise Cafe is a Nutley Church meet-up after the school run. The Maresfield and Nutley Churches page says it meets in the church hall from 9 to 10am, and that parents and children are welcome.

This is a community cafe, not a High Street restaurant. Confirm the day on the church page or the listing before you go, because parish sessions can pause. If you want a longer sit-down after a Forest walk, Forest Row village is the next place on this guide for cafes, pubs and shops.
